Vanillinmandelsäure (VMS) und Homovanillinsäure (HVS) sind Endprodukte des Katecholaminstoffwechsels. Die Bestimmung von VMS und HVS im Urin dient als Screening-Test für das Neuroblastom, einem der häufigsten soliden Tumoren in der frühen Kindheit. 5-Hydroxyindolylessigsäure (5-HIES) ist ein Metabolit von Serotonin und wird zur Diagnose von krebserregenden Tumoren verwendet.
