Die Bestimmung von Katecholaminen sowie ihrer Metaboliten (z. B. Metanephrin, Normetanephrin und 3-Methoxytyramin (=Metanephrine)) ist für das Management und die diagnostischen/therapeutischen Verfahren bei einer Reihe von klinischen Erkrankungen von Bedeutung. Erhöhte Metanephrinspiegel können zu behandlungsresistentem oder paroxysmalem Bluthochdruck beitragen, der häufig mit Symptomen wie Kopfschmerzen, Schwitzen und Herzklopfen einhergeht.
